Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
