This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
